SIBU – Though the Swan has been Sibu’s official mascot since 2000, no buildings have ever featured it as a mural in this town. Which is why, its sudden appearance on the walls of Sibu Municipal Council’s multi-storey car park created a buzz amongst the local media.
The town council has been flooded with calls by journalists who wanted to know how the project came about and why the Council adopted such an interesting colour scheme for the building.
The truth behind the whole facade is a simple story of teamwork, cooperation, flexibility and commitment. From our Executive Director to our contractor’s painter and from the Chairman of the Municipal Council YB Datuk Tiong Thai King to his officers, everyone who was in on this project believed in it.
The people who were roped in for this project spearheaded by the Building Products Division and KANSAI Paints were optimistic and solutions finders. Whenever a challenge arose, there were no finger pointing, instead a concerted effort to find a solution.
With the Executive Director paving the way for a presentation to be conducted by KANSAI & BP Division at the Council Chairman’s chamber, the Marketing Support Dept threw its creative skills behind the team by working late into the night and conjuring up a total of 10 different designs, thanks to Shaw Yu Tay and Siong Jee Kuon.
After two presentations, which included a team led by Maurice Sim from PANSAR and George Gee from KANSAI, the Municipal Council gave its nod of approval. Work began at a furious pace under the watchful eye of BP Division’s Nicholas Lau, and with some final tweaking here and there, the project completed on time.
Pleased with the enthusiastic response from the general public and the mass media in Sibu for the project, BP Divisional Manager Maurice Sim said other than the design, supply and apply aspects, what was most satisfying was the close cooperation between so many different departments both within and beyond PANSAR.
“Because of this collective effort, we are able to leave an indelible mark on Sibu’s urban landscape with our colour expression programme,” he said.
